West Ham United have made an offer of €2 million (around £1.6m) for Hamburg's Guy Demel, according to the defender's agent.

Hammers boss Avram Grant has been attempting to strengthen his squad before Tuesday's transfer deadline, and believes Demel could be a welcome boost for his defence.

The player’s agent, Saif Rubie, told Sky Sports: "West Ham have made an offer on Friday of €2m for Guy.

"However, whether it will be enough for Hamburg to do business with just three days of the transfer window left remains to be seen.

"Guy is very happy at Hamburg and committed to doing the very best he can for the club."

The Ivory Coast international operates mainly at right-back, an area of the field the Hammers are currently struggling with for numbers.

The 29-year-old Demel joined Hamburg from Borussia Dortmund in 2005 and also had a spell at Arsenal, although he did not make a league appearance.

West Ham earlier admitted their pursuit of England star David Beckham had come to an end.
