Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn says Ellis Short's appearance around the club this week lifted everyone involved.

After victory over Bolton Wanderers, Black Cats striker Darren Bent admitted Short's peptalk before the game had inspired their 4-0 win.

And Quinn told The Times: “We asked him to come to the game on Tuesday, asked him to show himself around and the whole place lifted.

"It helped having him around and there is no doubt he will be around a hell of a lot more, because he is emotionally tied in and he has the same aspirations as every fan. He winces when we miss chances just like the rest of them and he is thrilled when we score. He asks the right questions.”
