Old Firm hope for Boston friendly
The Old Firm are weighing up a lucrative offer to set up a friendly clash in Boston this summer.
The two clubs have never met outside of Glasgow but proposals have been made to organise a game between them in the States this July, which would be bound to attract wide support.
As yet, the idea remains in its infancy with no concrete plans made.
Celtic are pencilled in to face Manchester United in Toronto on July 16 or 17, while Rangers are considering games in Miami and New York.
With both clubs making the trip across the Atlantic this summer, the notion of an Old Firm game has been raised by a Stateside promotions company. The venue for the game would be the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, a stadium that Celtic have played in already when they drew against New England Revolution in July 2006 under previous manager Gordon Strachan.
There were just over 16,000 spectators who turned up for that game, but it is believed that an American-based Old Firm game would attract a crowd of around 70,000.
With Celtic and Rangers both struggling to compete financially with clubs south of the border, any genuine proposals to bolster their income will be met with interest. There was a previous idea floated for the Old Firm to meet in Australia back in 2004 when Martin O’Neill was at the Parkhead side, but the plans failed to come to fruition.
Celtic’s game against United in Toronto this summer is expected to draw in a crowd of around 50,000 and it is believed that an Old Firm game would be a mouth-watering contest with widespread appeal.
* ******well’s final home game of the season against Hibs has been moved forward 24 hours to Wednesday May 5 due to operational procedures for the general election which takes place on May 6.
