PARKHEAD latest: Boruc ‘No’ to Greeks
Artur Boruc has turned down an approach from Olympiakos over a move to Greece at the end of the season.
The Celtic goalkeeper is expected to quit the Parkhead club in the summer to embark on a fresh challenge after five years in Scotland. His current contract is set to expire at the end of next season and Celtic are unable to match the terms of one of their leading earners which means they will listen to offers for the £5m-rated keeper this summer.
It’s also believed Boruc feels now is the right time for him to try out a new challenge, with the English Premier League his preferred destination.
The shot-stopper has recently changed agent and is being offered to a host of clubs south of the border.
But the 30-year-old Polish internationalist won’t be moved to 2009 Greek champions Olympiakos as he feels, although the move might prove attractive from a financial point of view, it is not in the best interests of his career.
Celtic’s interim manager Neil Lennon would love to keep him on board, should he be handed the position on a permanent basis at the end of the season.
However, Boruc has made it clear he feels now is the right time for a change in direction. He has the option of remaining at Celtic for the final year of his contract before leaving on a Bosman, but that is something the Parkhead club want to avoid.
Celtic are reluctant to lose the player, but the emergence of his compatriot Lukasz Zaluska would soften the blow of his departure.
