Capello eyeing up Newcastle's Simpson
Fabio Capello has put Newcastle right-back Danny Simpson on his England radar.
Capello was at the Emirates on Sunday to check on Newcastle’s bad boy striker Andy Carroll. But ex-Manchester United trainee Simpson also caught the eye of the England manager and is now firmly in his mind as one for the future.
Capello’s assistant Franco Baldini had also seen Simpson the previous Sunday when he watched Newcastle thrash Sunderland and was impressed by the 23-year-old.
Capello will name his squad on Saturday night and is preparing to give some young players a chance against France next Wednesday.
While it may be too early for Simpson this time, Capello and Baldini have made discreet enquiries and Newcastle believe there may be a chance of a call-up.
Capello will definitely call up Carroll, 21, despite his off-the-field problems and - as revealed in Mirror Sport on Tuesday - the FA have given him clearance despite an impending court case.
Both Capello and Baldini have been hugely impressed by the centre-forward.
Capello will check on Sunderland’s highly-rated Jordan Henderson on Sunday when he goes to Chelsea, while Baldini will run the rule over Jack Wilshere as Everton entertain Arsenal.
Henderson and Wilshere are both set to be included.
