Club America 1-1 Manchester City
Manchester City defeated the Mexican side Club America on penalties after a 1-1 draw to record their first pre-season victory of the summer, with Yaya Toure making an impressive debut for Roberto Mancini’s side.
Toure, signed from Barcelona earlier this month for a £24 million fee, looked solid in the heart of the City midfield, with some elegant passes and touches as he started alongside his brother Kolo for the first time in a sky blue shirt.
Mancini also decided to give starts to the England World Cup pair Gareth Barry and Shaun Wright-Philips, who made their first outings since the tournament in South Africa.
City dominated the first half and deservedly took the lead when Emmanuel Adebayor converted a penalty after Adam Johnson was hauled down in the area.
That goal came after Club America had come closest to opening the scoring against the English side, albeit against the run of play; Daniel Montenegro struck Joe Hart’s post from 25 yards out.
City’s play looked sharp and slick and they deservedly went into the half-time interval a goal to the good; however, Mancini decided to make seven changes for the second half and Club America were soon on level terms.
Esqueda, the 22-year-old Mexican international, struck past Shay Given, who was making his first appearance since a shoulder injury, just two minutes into the second half to make the game 1-1.
Montenegro was then again denied by the woodwork from distance, before Adebayor had a volley crash against the crossbar with just two minutes remaining.
So, the game was decided by penalties and City prevailed, winning the spot kicks 4-1, with Shay Given reminding everybody of his goalkeeping abilities in the process by saving two Club America penalties.
Manchester City: Hart (Given 46); Richards (Cunningham 81), Toure Kolo (Lescott 46), Boyata, Bridge; Kompany (Zabaleta 46); Toure Yaya (Ireland 46), Barry (Vieira 46); Wright-Phillips (Weiss 46), A. Johnson (Jo 46); Adebayor.
