Default Levein wants rules change to cap Driver

Craig Levein has revealed that he is hopeful Scotland can implement a further rule change over which players are eligible to play for the national team. The Scotland boss hopes that relaxing a recent new rule could allow him to call up Hearts winger Andrew Driver for the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

The Scottish Football Association secured agreement in February over a proposed rule that allows the home nations to cap players who have had five years schooling in a country but Driver fell two months short of fulfilling the criteria. Levein says that he hopes a slight change to the agreement could see him select Driver, who played for England Under-21s last year.

"I still haven't given up on Andy. I'm still hoping we can do something with that,” Levein said.

"I'm hoping we can rewrite or reword the current agreement. It is a kind of gentleman's agreement between the four nations which then gets lodged with FIFA, so there is still a possibility and we are working on that."

The Scotland boss was a big influence on Driver’s early career, having helped him develop at Hearts. He clearly sees a role for the winger in his Euro 2012 qualifying campaign but was unsure if a rule change could be pushed through in time.

"I really don't know what timescale we are looking at,” he admitted. “It is something we are trying to do something about but how long that takes... I'm not up to speed on the workings at that level and how long it takes to do anything.

"There have been early noises made about it. I'm not saying it is definitely going to happen or that it's not going to happen but I am saying that it is something I have not given up on."

Driver said that he would be open to switching allegiance and revealed that Levein had kept him up to date with discussions.

"I said last time that I would love to play for Scotland but then it all broke down,” the winger told Scotland on Sunday. ”But I would still love to be involved and I have been kept in touch with what is happening.

"I know there are rules but I think it is the wording that is the problem. It all comes down to a technicality and that's why we are hoping they will amend it to make it clear what they mean by a school year."
