City "spies" set up Ross McCormack goal
Dave Jones revealed how Cardiff City 'spies' helped to set up the Bluebirds' opening goal in the 3-1 win over Watford.
Ross McCormack scored with a spectacular 25-yard effort from wide out on the left, and manager Dave said: "We'd had Watford watched quite a few times and we felt that if we could get someone of Ross's quality coming really deep, we could take advantage of the fact that Watford send everybody into the six yard box, and it was nice to see it work.
"We felt we could capitalize from the way they set up. It was a fantastic goal. It was one off the training ground and it's always nice seeing them go in, so all credit to the coaching staff and the scouts.
"Ross played because Chops had had his two match ban, and I'm always looking for competition for places, although I might change it again against Sheffield United on Wednesday. I've got goalscorers, so why not utilize them? I've always wanted that competition, and the ability to change things around. Chops gave up his shirt because he had ten bookings, but he's worked hard the last week or so and had a mini pre-season which he said he needed.
"Jay was ill today so it was a case of ignoring him and telling him to get out there and play. He's got those sheepish eyes that look at you when he wants to come off, but I thought he was superb today. He was ill, a bit dizzy and had been throwing up. I also thought Ross and Whitts did really well in the front line.
"Chris Burke was a bit fortunate with his goal because he drew the full back in and then the ball has hit the lad's knee, but Chris still had to finish it. Ross was a bit angry that the ball didn't come to him, but the goal killed off the game.
"In between, Whitts scored the second one, which took the sting out of Watford. It was a header, a difficult goal to score, but it showed Whitts' quality.
"Watford are in a situation where they want points as much as we do, and it was important for us to get the second one. We lacked a little bit of composure in the first half. We were slashing at the ball rather than passing our way out. We started quite brightly, but all credit to Watford - they are fighting for their lives just as we're fighting at the top.
"We showed more composure in the second half. It wasn't our best performance but really the second half was all about getting the three points, which we did. I was a bit disappointed that Watford got a goal, but 3-1 up with a minute to go is a nice situation to be in.
"Anthony Gerrard has got a calf injury. I thought Darcy did superbly out there today, and the two centre halves worked really hard. They had a big battle on their hands, but they coped really well."
