Default Coyle to trust to instinct in summer dealings

OWEN Coyle is happy to be guided by his gut feeling in his search for new faces this summer.

The Wanderers boss intends to freshen up his squad over the coming months but insists he will not take any unnecessary gambles on new recruits.

And that is exactly the situation Coyle, pictured, found himself in last week when, following a short-but-eventful pursuit of Ivory Coast international Aruna Dindane, he abruptly ended his interest in the pacy striker.

The Whites were in the driving seat to land the former Portsmouth loanee from RC Lens last Tuesday, despite interest from Premier League rivals Wolves and Greek champions Panathinaikos.

Just 48 hours later, however, Dindane’s agent Willie McKay said his player was heading to sign a lucrative deal with Lekhwiya – leaving many to assume Wanderers had been trumped by the Qatar-based club.

But Coyle claims the decision to cut ties was his own, after developing a bad feeling during negotiations.

“We made an enquiry and found out how much it would cost us if we chose to take him on,” he explained.

“I spoke with the chairman about finances and we were going to move the deal on. We were led to believe he was interested but when it came to the medical, we were told one thing, and then another, and I just pulled the plug on the whole thing.

“It was very clear and very simple – I went with my gut feeling and ended the deal.”

Coyle intends to trust those same instincts throughout the summer as he seeks out bargains in what is likely to be a flat transfer market.

“That’s how I work,” he said. “I only want players who are 100 per cent committed to Bolton Wanderers Football Club. If I feel for some reason they are not, then that’s that. We shake hands and move on.”

Speaking of his continuing transfer plans, Coyle says he has explored several avenues without making much progress so far.

But the Wanderers boss does not feel under any pressure at this stage of the close season.

“It’s an ongoing process but I am not in any immediate rush,” he said.

“A number of things has got to come to fruition before a deal can go through – and sometimes it just takes a phone call, and everything goes through.

“I’m certainly not going to start bringing players in just for the sake of it.”
