Default Alex McLeish backs Blues to come again

ALEX McLeish has backed his Blues players to kick on again during the Premier League finale.

“You can’t rest for a moment, you can’t get complacent, you can’t get casual,” said the Blues boss.

“We will keep the drive, keep the composure, keep the winning mentality.

“It was a shot in the arm the other night at Portsmouth, the result and performance, especially coming back from an FA Cup defeat.

“That showed the mentality again, the incredible heights these guys have scaled this season.

“The secret is to keep it going, to turn up for your work every week with the same performances, same performance-level – and then do it again next season.”

The FA Cup exit could have drawn a depressing line under the campaign, but Eck denied that it had.

“It’s not impossible getting further on [up the Premier League table] because we’re in a position now, if we can continue to create and score goals, where I know we’ve got a fantastic work ethic, from the front right back to the goalkeeper, to prevent goals.

“They were raging the other night when Portsmouth scored in stoppage time. Roger Johnson, Scott Dann and Joe Hart. I know how proud they are in getting shut-outs, like Cameron Jerome was proud of getting his two goals.

“That is the type of appetite we need going into the end of the season.”

McLeish could have Lee Carsley back as well for the run-in.

He has been out since the turn of the year with an ankle injury.

”He’s at a good level and maybe a week on Monday he might rejoin the group in terms of training and kicking the ball again.

“He’s been kicking it lightly, doing some running, getting some stamina back, now it’s about sharpness for him.”
