Default Wenger - Vela needs a good World Cup

Carlos Vela needs a good World Cup, according to Arsène Wenger.

The Mexican striker struggled with injuries last season and was restricted to just six Arsenal starts. But he played for his country against South Africa in the opening game of the tournament and the 21-year-old is also likely to be involved in today's clash with France.

Les Bleus have four Arsenal players in their squad and three of them - Bacary Sagna, William Gallas and Abou Diaby - started in last Friday's goalless draw with Uruguay.

Today's Group A match could be the second time that Arsenal players have gone head-to-head in this World Cup. Nicklas Bendtner and Robin Van Persie both featured in the Netherlands' 2-0 win over Denmark on Monday.

From a coaching perspective, Wenger is looking forward to the test Bacary Sagna will provide Vela. However, the manager firmly feels that the tournament could prove to be a confidence-booster for the Mexican.

"He needs a good World Cup," said the manager. "He had good preparation games but maybe he missed a little bit in the opening match. He has another chance in the second game and he will play against his Arsenal partner Sagna.

"For me it is very interesting to see our players in a different context and when they play against each other it is even more interesting for me."

Meanwhile Wenger, who is in South Africa commentating for French TV, is expecting an improvement from his home country.

"[Against Uruguay] France played the usual game that a European team plays against a South American team," he said. "They put you down to their pace and then you struggle to get them out of position because they have intelligent defenders. The same happened on Monday with Italy."
