Arsenal consider £5m bid for Newcastle defender Taylor
According to the Sunday Mirror, Arsenal are considering making a bid for Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor.
Taylor is contracted to Newcastle United until the end of next season and the defender has spent his entire career at St James' Park. However, club owner Mike Ashley appears determined not to spend enormous sums of cash on signings or new contracts in order to gamble on Premier League survival.
Although Taylor would like to stay at Newcastle United , he may consider a move if the club cannot offer him the terms he believes he deserves.
Meanwhile, armed with a summer war chest, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will likely target a centre-back, given the uncertain futures of aging defenders Sol Campbell , William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre at the Emirates Stadium.
The Sunday Mirror speculates that Arsenal are leading the likes of Chelsea, Aston Villa and Everton in the race for 24-year-old Taylor. Apparently, Wenger is particularly keen to sign an English centre-back in order to fulfill new UEFA quotas on 'home grown' players and he is prepared to make a £5million bid for Taylor.
Taylor scored one goal in 21 games for Newcastle United last season.
